Remember Skeet Schube’s Store?

Do you remember “Schube’s” that once stood on the east side of the 5th Street bridge?

The building which is now part of the Connersville museum wasn’t actually the first -or even second- site of Schube’s store.

The building below, which is thought by many to be the original, was torn down in 1965 and replaced with the “new” store —but this wasn’t the original Schube’s.

Final Schube’s store

Below, this “final” Schubes store still stands as part of the Connersville Museum. It is directly across from the Shell gas station on the east side of the 5th street bridge. If you don’t remember it as Schube’s, many of you might remember it when it was a Village Pantry convenience store. Jesse E. McFall is seen walking in the photo.

Original Schube’s store

After much searching, we finally found these old photo’s of “E. Hudson’s East Side Confectionery” which eventually became the original Schube’s store. This store was actually located on the north side of 5th Street, directly across the street from the store many remember.

The photo, looking west towards downtown Connersville, was taken approximately two years before the covered bridge was torn down. The building -now also gone- is where a row of small pine trees now grow.

The names of the men standing are said to be 1. Don McCann 2. Dane Steele 3. Harry Voorhees 4. Joe Pippin 5. Francis Schrank. If you look closely (Click photos to enlarge) you can see two more people in the picture. One is standing in the bridge and the other behind the number “2″ man – also there is a dog visible.

The photo above shows Walter Newell standing in front of the E. Hudson’s East Side Confectionery, a business that would later become the original Schube’s.
