Preliminary bridge replacement work in progress

Employees of Milestone Contractors of Columbus have been busy moving tons of dirt as they perform preliminary work to remove and replace an old bridge on County Road 150-East that spans Village Creek.

The area of the work is located about 2½ miles south of Connersville and just south of Alquina Road.

According to Indiana Department of Transportation (Greenfield District) public information director Harry Maginity, Milestone officials indicated the company plans to remove and replace the old structure during the 2012 construction season.

The new bridge will be a 3-span, 100-foot concrete slab structure. The contract completion date is Oct. 18, 2013.

Milestone Contractors — reportedly the lowest of six bidders — was awarded a $1,615,300 contract by INDOT to perform the work.

Several weeks ago, employees of Sunesis Construction completed replacing a bridge on County Road 150-East near Shelton’s Plat. The bridge spans a tributary that feeds into the Whitewater River.

The new bridge is a 3-span concrete structure that measures 60 feet long and 48 feet wide. The intersection of County Roads 150-North and 150-East were “re-profiled,” according to INDOT.

The bridge was replaced under a $630,118 Local Public Agency (LPA) contract. The Federal Highway Administration paid 80 percent of LPA project costs, Fayette County contributed 20 percent.
