Gordon tells Urban he won’t push recount further

Pal-item.com Democratic mayoral candidate Harold Gordon said Monday he will not appeal the judicial decision that awarded the mayor’s race to incumbent Mayor Leonard Urban.

Gordon said he told Urban at a Board of Works meeting on Monday of his decision.

“I wished him good luck,” Gordon said. “It’s best for the city. It’s time to let the city heal up. I don’t agree with all the judge decided, but it’s not worth costing either side more money.”

Special Judge Eugene Stewart, who received the recount commission’s report, last week declared Urban the winner by a 14-vote margin.

The recount commission had said the race was a tie, but Stewart reinstated 220 absentee ballots disqualified by the commission due to lack of election officials’ initials on the ballots, even though all ballot sleeves were initialed.
